What is a logo?

For me the simplest definition would be:


A design used to identify an entity


This definition can be expanded to describe an entity as an organisation or individual, include the identification of various aspects of an organisation (products, services, staff etc) or to describe design variations (graphic symbol or type related). An abbreviation of logogram or logotype, the word logo is derived from the Ancient Greek work logos, which means word or reason.


For logo designers, it's important to keep in mind this definition so that every logo they design primarily helps to identify their client. It's also super helpful to listen to expert designers to inform other factors of the design that come together to turn functional logos into beautiful ones.

I put to ChatGPT the following prompt in order to gain some insight into the opinions of some expert designers that I personally admire:
